A hand-painted ceramic board from the Amanda series, designed by Christina Campbell for Rörstrand in Sweden in 1968.

Model 30 has a distinctive elongated form with a pointed top and a decorative pattern of stylised leaves and rounded forms. The motif combines deep cobalt blue, soft turquoise and dark brown against a pale grey-white glazed ground.

Originally designed as a functional kitchen board, the piece is now particularly well suited to display as a decorative object or to use as a serving board for dry foods. A small opening at the top allows it to be hung on the wall.

The reverse is marked Rörstrand Sweden 30.

Story

About the Series: Amanda

Amanda is a decorative pattern created by Christina Campbell for Rörstrand in 1968. It was used on several different ceramic forms, allowing the same visual language to take on different proportions from one piece to another.

The pattern combines a pale ground with areas of deep blue and warm brown, together with stylised floral elements. The decoration has a distinctly graphic quality, with the larger areas of colour providing structure and the botanical details adding movement across the surface.

Rather than covering the entire object with a continuous motif, the composition leaves areas of the ground visible. This creates a balance between the decoration and the ceramic form and gives the pattern a lighter appearance.

The present piece is Model 30, a ceramic serving board. Its broad, relatively flat surface provides a particularly clear view of Campbell’s composition and the relationship between the colour fields and floral decoration.

About the Designer: Christina Campbell

Christina Campbell (born 1940) is a Swedish artist and designer whose work has encompassed ceramics, drawing and printmaking.

Her period at Rörstrand, from 1966 to 1972, coincided with an important stage in the development of Swedish tableware, when graphic decoration became an increasingly significant part of the identity of everyday ceramics.

Campbell approached the ceramic surface with the eye of a graphic artist. Colour, line, repetition and the distribution of motifs are carefully balanced, creating patterns that remain visually strong without depending on elaborate ornament.

Her work for Rörstrand included a number of different patterns, among them Amanda, Agda, Augusta, Karolina, Klunk, Laban, Pyret and Tobias. Each has its own colour scheme and graphic character, but together they show her interest in adapting a two-dimensional visual language to three-dimensional objects.

After her work with Rörstrand, Campbell continued her artistic career with a stronger focus on drawing and printmaking. Her ceramic designs remain an important part of the Swedish tableware produced during the 1960s and early 1970s.

About the Brand: Rörstrand Sweden

Rörstrand was founded in Stockholm in 1726 and developed into one of Sweden’s most important ceramic and porcelain manufacturers. Over its long history, the company moved through several locations and different types of production before establishing its main 20th-century factory in Lidköping.

The company’s importance lies not only in the longevity of its production, but also in the way it worked with designers. Rörstrand brought together specialists in form, decoration and ceramics, allowing different creative approaches to coexist within its tableware and decorative production.

During the 20th century, this resulted in an unusually broad range of objects. Alongside complete services, Rörstrand produced individual decorative patterns that could be applied to different forms, giving designers considerable freedom to develop the visual character of everyday ceramics.

Rörstrand became part of the Upsala-Ekeby group in 1964, linking it to a much larger network of Swedish ceramic manufacturers. The Lidköping factory continued production for decades afterwards, finally closing in 2005.

Today, Rörstrand represents one of the longest and most varied traditions in Swedish ceramics, encompassing everything from early porcelain and faience to the highly individual tableware and decorative ceramics created by 20th-century designers.
