A sculptural ruby red art glass vase from the Onnenlehti series, designed by Helena Tynell for Riihimäen Lasi in Finland in 1971.
The vase has a distinctive four-lobed silhouette inspired by a four-leaf clover. Its compact, rounded body opens into four softly curved sections at the rim, creating a sculptural outline that changes noticeably when viewed from different angles.
The deep ruby red glass is particularly striking in natural light, revealing variations in colour and depth through the curved walls. The vase was produced using a mould-blown technique, with a substantial glass body and a clear cased base that lifts the coloured form visually from the surface.
A strong decorative object on its own, the vase also works beautifully with a small floral arrangement.

Story
Onnenlehti is a glass series designed by Helena Tynell for Riihimäen Lasi and produced between 1971 and 1976.
The series is defined by its raised leaf-like relief, which gives the surface a strong three-dimensional quality. The pattern is integrated into the glass rather than added afterwards, so the texture becomes part of the structure of the vase.
The rounded forms and the repeated relief create an interesting contrast between softness and geometry. Light moves differently across the raised and recessed areas, making the surface appear more or less pronounced depending on the angle and surrounding light.
Onnenlehti was produced in several forms and colours. The ruby-red glass is particularly effective with this design because the colour gains depth in the thicker areas of the vessel, while the relief catches the light across the surface.
This example is the ruby-red version, with the characteristic Onnenlehti relief and the generous rounded proportions associated with the series.
About the Designer: Helena Tynell
Helena Tynell (1918–2016) developed a personal language in glass that is easy to recognise without relying on decoration or elaborate shapes. Her work often starts with a relatively simple vessel and then changes its character through colour, transparency, texture or relief.
She studied model design in Helsinki and joined Riihimäen Lasi in 1946. Her collaboration with the company lasted for several decades and resulted in a remarkably broad range of glass objects, from everyday pieces to more expressive decorative forms.
One of the most interesting aspects of Tynell’s work is her sensitivity to the physical behaviour of glass. Colour becomes deeper where the material is thicker, light moves across uneven surfaces, and moulded textures can completely alter the appearance of an otherwise simple form. These qualities give her work a very tactile presence.
Tynell continued working internationally after her years at Riihimäen Lasi, particularly in the field of glass lighting. Her career spans an important period in Finnish design, when glass moved increasingly between functional production, decorative objects and independent artistic expression.
About the Brand: Riihimäen Lasi
Riihimäen Lasi belongs to the generation of Finnish glass manufacturers that helped make glass an important part of the country’s design identity during the 20th century.
Founded in 1910, the company produced a wide range of glass throughout its history. What makes its design production particularly interesting is the variety of approaches that existed under the same manufacturer: designers could develop very different ideas about colour, shape and surface while working within an industrial setting.
Names such as Helena Tynell, Nanny Still, Tamara Aladin and Aimo Okkolin are associated with different chapters of Riihimäen Lasi’s design history. Their work shows how broad the company’s production became, from practical household glass to highly individual decorative objects.
The company stopped producing handmade glass in 1976 and continued with industrial glass production until the factory closed in 1990. Its legacy is particularly important within Finnish glass, where Riihimäen Lasi remains closely associated with the development of designer glass during the post-war decades.
