Designed by Tamara Aladin for Riihimäen Lasi in 1968, the Kehrä 1496 vase has a compact architectural form in mould-blown steel-blue glass. Its square lower body has a textured surface, while two raised sections are decorated with repeated circular reliefs.

Thicker areas reveal the muted blue tone, and the relief catches the light from different angles. The original metallic Finncristall export label remains attached.

Story

About the Series: Kehrä

Kehrä was designed by Tamara Aladin for Riihimäen Lasi in 1968 and remained in production until 1976.

The series is characterised by compact geometric forms combined with contrasting surface treatments. The 1496 model brings together a textured lower body with smoother sections and repeated circular reliefs around the upper part of the vase.

The mould-blown construction gives the glass considerable thickness, allowing colour, texture and relief to interact with the light. Kehrä was produced in several forms and colours during its production period.

About the Designer: Tamara Aladin

Tamara Aladin (1932–2019) was a Finnish glass designer who worked for Riihimäen Lasi from 1959. During her years with the company, she created a large body of glassware and art glass.

Her designs are characterised by strong geometric forms, generous volumes and a confident use of colour. She worked extensively with mould-blown glass, using the possibilities of industrial production to create pieces in which form, colour and surface remain central to the design.

Aladin’s work for Riihimäen Lasi includes some of the company’s most recognisable glass designs of the 1960s and 1970s.

About the Brand: Riihimäen Lasi Finland

Riihimäen Lasi was founded in Finland in 1910 and became one of the country’s major glass manufacturers during the 20th century.

The company worked with numerous Finnish designers and artists, producing both everyday glassware and more sculptural art glass. During the post-war period, designers including Tamara Aladin and Helena Tynell contributed significantly to the character of the company’s collections.

Riihimäen Lasi became particularly known for its use of mould-blown and pressed glass, combining industrial production with strong forms, colour and surface treatments.

The company’s glass production continued until 1990.
