A set of six large clear glass tumblers from the Aslak series, designed by Tapio Wirkkala for Iittala.

The tumblers have a substantial, organic form with a pronounced textured surface and a distinctive hexagonal base. The irregular relief catches and disperses the light across the clear glass, while the weight and proportions give each tumbler a solid feel in the hand.

The combination of a simple silhouette and pronounced surface texture is characteristic of the Aslak series, bringing an expressive quality to an otherwise functional drinking glass.

Story

About the Series: Aslak

Aslak is a range of drinking glasses created by Tapio Wirkkala for Iittala and introduced at the end of the 1960s. The collection was made in several sizes, allowing the same basic design to be used for different types of drinks.

What gives the glasses their character is the surface. Instead of adding decoration to the outside, the glass itself is shaped to create a regular textured pattern. This catches reflections and makes the appearance of the glass change depending on the light.

The proportions are deliberately straightforward. A relatively strong wall and clearly defined base give the glasses a solid feel in the hand, while the transparent material prevents the textured surface from becoming visually heavy.

Aslak was produced for many years, and examples can be found in different sizes from the smallest drinking glasses through to larger versions. This set consists of the 40 cl size, one of the more generous forms in the range.

About the Designer: Tapio Wirkkala

Tapio Wirkkala (1915–1985) was one of the central figures of Finnish design during the post-war period. His work crossed the boundaries between industrial design, sculpture, glass, wood, furniture and graphic design.

He trained in sculpture in Helsinki, and that background remained visible throughout his career. Even when designing objects intended for everyday use, he tended to think in terms of volume, balance, movement and the physical qualities of the material.

His relationship with Iittala began in 1946 and continued throughout his career. Glass became one of his most important materials, but he also designed extensively in wood, metal, ceramics and other materials. His work often transformed observations from the natural world into highly controlled forms without simply reproducing them.

Wirkkala was equally interested in objects made for everyday use and in more experimental pieces. This ability to move between industrial production and artistic work is an important part of his contribution to Finnish design.

About the Brand: Iittala

Iittala began as a glassworks in the Finnish village of Iittala in 1881. Glass remained at the centre of the company, but during the 20th century its identity became increasingly connected with design and with collaborations between manufacturers and individual designers.

The company developed a particularly strong reputation for bringing modern forms into everyday Finnish homes. Rather than treating tableware simply as a functional category, Iittala gave considerable importance to the relationship between shape, material and use.

The designers associated with Iittala over the decades represent very different approaches. Aino and Alvar Aalto, Kaj Franck, Timo Sarpaneva, Oiva Toikka and Tapio Wirkkala each contributed to different stages of the company’s design history.

Wirkkala’s long association with Iittala belongs to this broader development. His work helped demonstrate how an everyday glass could also be approached as an object of design, with its material qualities and construction forming an essential part of the final result.
