Story

About the Series: Cheri

Cheri is a mid-century cutlery design by Danish designer Henning Seidelin, characterised by its elongated proportions and the contrast between smooth surfaces and the textured detail near the upper part of the handle.

The design has a slender, carefully balanced silhouette. Its long handles give the individual pieces a light appearance, while the change in surface near the upper section introduces a tactile element that becomes particularly visible when the cutlery is held.

Cheri is associated with different Scandinavian productions, including Frigast in Denmark and GAB in Sweden. The existence of different manufacturer versions is part of the history of the design, with the respective marks providing an important way of identifying individual examples.

The design is a good illustration of Seidelin’s approach to everyday objects: relatively restrained in appearance, but with enough variation in proportion and surface to give the pieces a distinct identity.

About the Designer: Henning Seidelin

Henning Seidelin (1904–1987) was a Danish sculptor and designer whose work extended across furniture, domestic objects, ceramics and metalware.

His background in sculpture influenced his approach to designed objects, particularly in his attention to proportion, volume and the way an object is experienced through use. Rather than relying on elaborate decoration, he often gave everyday objects their character through their shape and tactile details.

Seidelin worked with a number of manufacturers during his career and developed designs for both the home and more specialised industrial applications. His work in tableware is particularly representative of the mid-century interest in making functional objects visually precise without making them overly formal.

His cutlery designs show this approach particularly clearly: the proportions are carefully controlled, while relatively small changes in contour or texture provide the distinctive character of each pattern.

About the Brand: GAB

GAB, short for Guldsmedsaktiebolaget, was a Swedish silver and metalware manufacturer founded in Stockholm in 1867.

The company developed a substantial production of silverware and plated metalware, working across both traditional silver objects and tableware designed for more contemporary domestic settings.

Silver-plated cutlery formed an important part of this production. The material allowed GAB to combine established metalworking techniques with simpler forms suited to changing tastes in Swedish dining during the 20th century.

GAB worked with different designs and manufacturers’ patterns over the course of its history, making its pieces particularly interesting when studied through their marks, materials and forms.
