An 18-piece Danish silverplated cutlery set from the Fleur series, designed by sculptor Henning Seidelin in the 1950s for Frigast.

The Fleur pattern combines a slender, tapered handle with a raised botanical motif of stylised leaves and floral elements at the transition between the handle and the utensil. The relief adds a decorative detail to an otherwise clean, elongated form, while the polished silverplated surface gives the pieces a soft, reflective finish.

This service is for six people and consists of six dinner knives, six dinner forks and six table spoons. The proportions and substantial feel of the pieces make them equally suited to everyday dining or a more considered table setting.

Story

About the Series: Fleur

Fleur is a silver-plated cutlery design by Henning Seidelin, produced by Frigast in Denmark. Its slender silhouette is defined by a long, gently shaped handle and a subtle transition between the different sections of each piece.

The design is restrained rather than decorative. Small changes in volume and surface give the handles their character, while the polished silver-plated finish emphasises their clean outline. The result is a pattern that feels light and understated when placed on the table.

Fleur was produced in several types of flatware and belongs to the group of mid-century Scandinavian designs that brought a more modern approach to formal dining. The silver-plated finish was particularly suited to this type of design, allowing the form and detailing of the individual pieces to remain visible without heavy ornament.

About the Designer: Henning Seidelin

Henning Seidelin (1904–1987) was a Danish sculptor and designer whose career developed across both artistic and industrial work. He studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen and began his career as a sculptor before moving into a wide range of designed objects.

His work extended across ceramics, furniture, kitchen equipment, silver and metalware, as well as products for the home. He collaborated with several established Danish manufacturers, including Bing & Grøndahl, Søholm Keramik and Frigast.

Seidelin brought a sculptor’s attention to volume and physical form to objects made for everyday surroundings. His designs often rely on carefully resolved proportions, tactile details and the relationship between different surfaces rather than on applied decoration.

His work for Frigast includes several recognised Danish flatware patterns, among them Fleur, Cheri and Savoy, showing his ability to translate his understanding of form into objects designed to be handled and used.

About the Brand: Frigast Denmark

Frigast was a Danish manufacturer specialising in silver and silver-plated metalware. The company produced domestic silverware and flatware and worked with Danish designers throughout the 20th century.

Its silver-plated production reflects the changing character of Scandinavian tableware during the mid-century period. Alongside traditional silverware, manufacturers increasingly developed pieces with simpler silhouettes and a stronger emphasis on proportion, usability and the quality of the material.

Frigast collaborated with a number of Danish designers to develop these more contemporary forms. The company’s production includes several patterns that have become associated with Danish mid-century tableware, with Henning Seidelin among its notable collaborators.

The combination of established metalworking traditions and modern design was central to Frigast’s production. Its silver-plated pieces offered a practical alternative to solid silver while allowing designers considerable freedom in developing new forms for the dining table.
