A warm, sand-toned Tunturi stoneware coffee service by Arabia Finland, designed by Ulla Procopé and decorated by Olga Osol. Its matte surface is paired with hand-painted brown botanical motifs.
The restrained palette and simple cylindrical forms give the tableware a grounded presence, while subtle variations in the brushwork make each piece distinct within the set.

Story
About the Series: Tunturi
Tunturi brings together two different parts of Arabia’s design process: the S-model form created by Ulla Procopé and the Tunturi decoration developed by Olga Osol in 1967.
The underlying form is deliberately simple, with balanced proportions and a strong connection between the individual pieces of the tableware. Against this restrained shape, the decoration introduces a much more expressive element through its hand-painted botanical pattern.
The combination of the earthy ceramic surface and the darker painted motifs gives Tunturi a particularly warm character. Because the decoration was applied by hand, small variations in the brushwork and distribution of colour are part of the appearance of the individual pieces.
Arabia produced the Tunturi tableware between 1969 and 1972, including coffee and tea cups, saucers, plates, serving pieces and other elements for the table.
About the Designer: Ulla Procopé & Olga Osol
Ulla Procopé (1921–1968) and Olga Osol (1905–1994) represent two complementary aspects of Finnish ceramic design at Arabia.
Procopé trained as a ceramic artist and spent most of her professional career at Arabia. She was particularly involved in functional tableware, developing forms that could accommodate different decorations while remaining practical for everyday use. Her work is closely associated with some of Arabia’s best-known ceramic forms of the 1950s and 1960s.
Olga Osol worked at Arabia primarily as a decorator. Her contribution was centred on the ceramic surface, where colour, painted line and motif could transform an existing form. Her work demonstrates how decoration at Arabia was treated as an independent part of the design process rather than simply an addition to an object.
Their roles on Tunturi illustrate this distinction particularly well: Procopé’s form provides the structure, while Osol’s decoration gives the pieces their visual identity.
About the Brand: Arabia
Arabia was established in Helsinki in 1873 and became one of Finland’s major ceramic manufacturers. Its production developed from practical household ceramics into a much broader field that included tableware, decorative objects and designs created in collaboration with artists and designers.
One of Arabia’s strengths during the 20th century was the way different areas of design could work together. A ceramic form could be developed independently and subsequently receive different decorations, allowing designers with different specialities to contribute to the same piece.
This approach produced an exceptionally varied body of Finnish tableware. Designers such as Ulla Procopé, Kaj Franck, Raija Uosikkinen and Olga Osol each worked within the company in different ways, contributing to the development of Arabia’s distinctive visual language.
Arabia’s mid-century production is particularly significant because it brought modern Finnish design into everyday domestic use. Forms were designed for practical use, while colour, decoration and material were given enough importance to make the objects visually distinctive as well.
