A refined and sculptural example of 1930s Swedish ceramic artistry by Arthur Percy for Gefle Porslinsfabrik. This elegant celadon-glazed swirl set includes one large decorative dish and five smaller matching plates, all featuring Percy's distinctive fluid relief and organic form. The large dish displays a beautiful, subtle metallic sheen within its celadon glaze—a rare quality that enhances the movement and depth of its swirling design, creating a luminous surface that changes gently with the light.

The celadon glaze, first developed in China over a thousand years ago, is highly prized for its translucence, depth, and subtle tonal variations. Percy's adaptation of celadon for Gefle transformed a traditionally Asian aesthetic into a distinctly Nordic expression: calm, restrained, and exquisitely balanced in form and color.

Story

About the Celadon Series

This series showcases Gefle's exploration of sophisticated glazing during the interwar years, where Arthur Percy introduced oriental-inspired techniques into Swedish decorative ceramics. Achieving celadon glaze in European production during the 1930s was technically demanding—the delicate green hue emerges only under specific temperature and oxidation conditions, requiring precise kiln control. This technical challenge made such pieces rare and sought-after, representing a pinnacle of ceramic craftsmanship. The swirl relief design adds sculptural dimension, creating interplay between form and glaze that captures light and shadow throughout the day.

About the Designer: Arthur Percy

Arthur Percy (1886–1976) was a pioneering Swedish designer and artist who worked across ceramics, glass, and textiles. As artistic director at Gefle Porslinsfabrik from 1923 to 1939, he introduced modernist principles and international influences into Swedish ceramic production.

Percy's work is characterized by elegant forms, refined glazes, and a sophisticated understanding of both function and aesthetics. He was among the first Swedish designers to successfully adapt Asian glazing techniques for European production, bringing celadon and other oriental-inspired finishes to Scandinavian ceramics. His designs bridge Art Deco elegance with emerging modernist sensibilities, creating pieces that are both decorative and functional.

Percy's designs remain highly collectible and are represented in major museums worldwide, including the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm and the Röhsska Museum in Gothenburg. His work for Gefle represents some of the finest Swedish ceramic art of the interwar period.

About the Brand: Gefle

Founded in 1910 in Gävle, Sweden, Gefle Porslinsfabrik quickly became one of the leading names in Swedish ceramics. Known for its artistic direction under designers like Arthur Percy and Berit Ternell, the factory produced tableware and art ceramics of exceptional quality.

In the 1930s–50s, Gefle's work stood out for its modern forms and pioneering glazing methods, including the celebrated celadon finishes. The company became part of Upsala-Ekeby in 1936, continuing to influence Scandinavian ceramic design for decades. Production under the Gefle name continued until 1979, when the facilities were fully integrated into Upsala-Ekeby.

Vintage Gefle ceramics from the Percy era are now highly sought after by collectors for their artistic merit, technical excellence, and historical significance in Swedish design.

The Celadon Swirl Dish Set by Arthur Percy for Gefle is more than a functional object—it's a sculptural masterpiece that embodies the elegance and technical sophistication of 1930s Swedish design. With its flowing organic forms, luminous celadon glaze, and rare metallic sheen, this set represents a pinnacle of Nordic ceramic artistry. The swirl relief creates a sense of movement frozen in clay, while the translucent glaze reveals depth and subtlety that changes with every angle of light. Whether displayed as art or used for elegant serving, this set brings both beauty and history to any collection or interior. A museum-quality example of Swedish Art Deco ceramics, ready to be treasured for generations to come.
