A rectangular vase from the iconic Angelina series designed by Mari Simmulson for Upsala Ekeby in the early 1960s. This striking 16cm piece features Simmulson's distinctive daisy motif—a bold white flower with black center set against a richly textured, moss-green glaze that creates an organic, almost volcanic surface. The relief pattern catches light and shadow throughout the day, transforming this compact vase into a sculptural statement piece.

The Angelina series represents Simmulson's mastery of combining decorative relief with functional form. The textured glaze creates depth and visual interest, while the daisy motif adds a touch of whimsy to the sophisticated design—a perfect balance that defines Swedish studio pottery of the 1960s.

Story

About the Designer: Mari Simmulson

Mari Simmulson (1911–2000) was one of Sweden's most important ceramic artists of the 20th century. She worked for Upsala Ekeby from 1949 to 1972, creating some of the most distinctive and collectible pieces in Swedish studio pottery.

Simmulson's work is characterized by bold, graphic designs combined with rich, textured glazes and organic forms. She had a particular talent for creating pieces that balanced artistic expression with functional beauty. Her designs often featured stylized natural motifs—flowers, leaves, and abstract patterns—rendered in a distinctly modern Scandinavian style.

The Angelina series, produced in the early 1960s, is among her most celebrated works. The series showcases her signature approach: combining heavily textured, almost sculptural surfaces with bold graphic decoration. Each piece was individually crafted, making every vase unique in its surface texture and glaze variation.

Simmulson's work is highly sought after by collectors, valued for its artistic quality, craftsmanship, and its representation of Swedish studio pottery at its finest.

About the Brand: Upsala Ekeby

Founded in 1886 in Uppsala, Sweden, Upsala Ekeby became one of Sweden's most important ceramic manufacturers. The company produced both utilitarian pottery and artistic studio pieces, with the latter becoming increasingly important during the mid-20th century.

During the 1950s and 1960s, Upsala Ekeby's studio pottery division attracted some of Sweden's most talented ceramic artists, including Mari Simmulson, Ingrid Atterberg, and Anna-Lisa Thomson. These designers created distinctive, hand-crafted pieces that combined artistic vision with Scandinavian design principles.

The studio pottery from this era is characterized by rich, experimental glazes, textured surfaces, and bold decorative motifs. Each piece was individually crafted, often signed by the artist, making them unique works of art rather than mass-produced objects.

Upsala Ekeby closed in 1978, but the legacy of its studio pottery lives on. Vintage pieces, particularly those by Mari Simmulson, are highly collectible and valued for their artistic quality and their role in the history of Swedish ceramic art.

This Mari Simmulson Angelina vase for Upsala Ekeby is a perfect example of Swedish studio pottery at its finest—bold, sculptural, and beautifully crafted. The textured surface and relief decoration create a piece that is as much sculpture as functional object, bringing artistic presence to any space. Whether displayed with flowers or as a standalone decorative piece, this vase celebrates the golden age of Scandinavian ceramic art. A collectible piece in excellent condition, ready to bring Swedish design heritage into your home.
