Småland: Where Craft and Design Converge

Småland: Where Craft and Design Converge

The landscapes of Småland where nature shapes design.

In Småland, forests meet crystal workshops, lakes meet furniture studios, and centuries of craftsmanship meet modern living. It is a region where design is not just made—it is lived. Over centuries, Småland has cultivated a mindset where functionality, durability, and understated beauty coexist naturally, shaping everything from glass to furniture, from workshops to homes around the world.

“In Glasriket, beauty arises

from purpose and mastery

rather than decoration.”

Glassmaking in Glasriket, centuries of mastery captured in every curve.

Glasriket The Kingdom of Crystal

At the southern edge of Småland lies Glasriket, the Kingdom of Crystal, a region spanning four municipalities: Emmaboda, Lessebo, Nybro, and Uppvidinge. This area has been home to world-renowned glass brands such as Kosta Boda, Orrefors, Åfors, and Pukeberg, among others, which continue to uphold the region’s tradition of precision, quality, and functional elegance.

Walking into a Glasriket workshop, you immediately sense the heritage: furnaces glowing, artisans shaping molten crystal with precision and patience. The region’s natural resources created ideal conditions for glassmaking: dense forests provided wood to fuel the furnaces, lakes and rivers supplied water for processing, and silica-rich sand allowed for the creation of high-quality crystal.

Glassmaking began in the 18th century, as local artisans and visiting masters refined techniques passed down through generations. In Glasriket, each piece embodies functionality, purpose, and mastery. Blowing, molding, engraving, and cutting are not just techniques—they are philosophies. Ornamentation is secondary; beauty arises naturally from skill and clarity of form.

“Every piece embodies

simplicity, clarity, and

timeless elegance.”

Functional elegance, furniture crafted to endure.

Timeless Furniture and Functional Craftsmanship

Småland’s creative legacy extends beyond glass to furniture and functional design, shaped by the practical demands of everyday life.

Carl Malmsten, one of the region’s most celebrated designers, focused on solid wood furniture that balances simplicity, elegance, and longevity. Iconic pieces such as his Stenstorp dining table and high-backed chairs reflect Småland’s philosophy: respect for materials, functional clarity, and timeless aesthetic.

Other designers, including Gunnar Bolin and Nils Jonsson, contributed to this tradition. Contemporary workshops continue producing furniture that embodies craftsmanship, functionality, and minimalism, connecting historical values with modern life.

Walking into a Malmsten dining room is like stepping into a space shaped by Småland itself: the wood, the proportions, the light—all speak of practicality and elegance.

“IKEA reshaped domestic

life, ranslating centuries of

Småland craftsmanship into

everyday experiences.”

Ivar Kamprad and the Global Language of Småland Design

Born in Småland, Ivar Kamprad founded IKEA in 1943, at the age of 17. Starting as a small mail-order business selling everyday objects, he quickly expanded into furniture production. The first pieces—simple wooden chairs and tables—were designed for functionality, durability, and accessibility, reflecting Småland’s ethos of practicality and elegance.

IKEA revolutionized home design by introducing self-assembly and modularity, allowing individuals to shape their own spaces while reducing transport costs. Every piece combined functional elegance, simplicity, and durability, turning Småland’s craftsmanship into an industrial yet human-centered experience.

Beyond furniture, IKEA changed the way people live and think about their homes, teaching a new relationship between space, furniture, and daily life. In this sense, IKEA is an industrial expression of Småland’s values: ingenuity, practicality, and respect for materials scaled globally, without losing the clarity and utility that define the region.

“In every forest, workshop,

and lake, Småland quietly

shapes the way we

live and see design.”

Småland’s landscape, including its forests, lakes, and workshops, has shaped a community that values patience, precision, and quality. This culture is reflected in every object, from blown glass to wooden furniture and textiles.

Historical and contemporary photographs capture this continuity: light filtering through workshop windows, vitrines showcasing perfectly crafted glass, and surfaces of wood and ceramic revealing years of careful use.
