A sculptural sommerso glass vase signed by Vicke Lindstrand for Kosta Glasbruk, Sweden, model LH 1897, crafted in the 1960s.
Worked in solid glass using the sommerso technique, this piece features an intense amber core suspended within a thick transparent crystal mass. The rectilinear form, with soft edges and vertical profile, reveals the sculptural character that defined Lindstrand's work during his time at Kosta: volumes of great optical purity, chromatic control, and an exquisite sense of proportion.

Story
About the Designer: Vicke Lindstrand
Vicke Lindstrand (1904–1983) was a key figure in 20th-century Swedish glass. Trained as an illustrator and later as a glass designer, he developed his own language based on refined forms, dense volumes, and masterful use of encapsulated color. After his long period at Orrefors, he joined Kosta in 1950, where he produced some of his most recognizable works: pieces with architectural lines, impeccable surfaces, and extraordinary technical control.
About the Brand: Kosta
Founded in 1742, Kosta is Sweden's oldest glassworks and one of the most prestigious names in Scandinavian glass. During the mid-20th century, Kosta became a creative laboratory where designers like Vicke Lindstrand could explore new techniques and artistic expressions. The sommerso technique—encapsulating colored glass within clear crystal—required exceptional skill and precision, and Kosta's master glassblowers were among the best in the world.
This LH 1897 vase is not simply a decorative object—it's a piece of Swedish glass history. The sculptural form and luminous amber core transform light into art, creating subtle variations in tone and intensity throughout the day. This is the kind of design that celebrates the golden age of Scandinavian glass and becomes a treasured piece in any collection.
