In 1978, Timo Sarpaneva created Arkipelago—a collection that captures the essence of the Finnish archipelago in crystal. This set of three square candelabras embodies his mastery of light and form, where characteristic air bubbles float suspended in glass like islands in a frozen sea. Each piece transforms candlelight into a living sculpture, casting dancing shadows that shift with every flicker of flame.
The Arkipelago series represents Sarpaneva's ability to capture natural phenomena in glass, bringing the beauty of Finland's coastal landscapes into the home through sculptural design.

Story
Arkipelago Series
The Arkipelago (Archipelago) series was designed by Timo Sarpaneva in 1978 for Iittala. The name refers to the Finnish archipelago, one of Finland's natural wonders with thousands of islands scattered across the Baltic Sea. The air bubbles trapped in the transparent crystal recreate this unique geography, turning each piece into a small work of art that captures the essence of the Nordic landscape.
Designer: Timo Sarpaneva
Timo Sarpaneva (1926-2006) was one of the most influential glass designers of the 20th century. He worked for Iittala for over 50 years, creating some of the most iconic pieces of Finnish design. His work is characterized by experimentation with glass-blowing techniques and the creation of sculptural forms that blur the line between art and functional design. He won numerous international awards, including three Grand Prix at the Milan Triennale.
Brand: Iittala
Iittala is one of the most prestigious Finnish design brands in the world, founded in 1881 in the village of Iittala, Finland. For over 140 years, the brand has been synonymous with excellence in glass and ceramic design. Iittala has collaborated with the greatest Finnish designers, including Alvar Aalto, Kaj Franck, and Timo Sarpaneva, creating timeless pieces that combine functionality with sculptural beauty.
These Arkipelago pieces are not simply candelabras, they are light sculptures that capture the essence of the Finnish landscape. Each time you light a candle, the light will dance among the crystal bubbles, creating a luminous spectacle that evokes the waters of the Baltic at sunset. This is the kind of design that transcends trends and becomes a family treasure passed down from generation to generation.
